ARTIST'S STATEMENT Jayme Asselin Each compartment in this box represents some aspect of my life. My longstanding love of music is shown in the running notes and small clarinet handmade from a clarinet reed. Years of horticultural training and a fondness for the seasons and colors of fall and spring can be seen in the floating trees and falling leaves. My love of piles of snow sit with the snowman. My Catholic faith is shown in the shining, quiet cross. My fencing career at Michigan State University is captured in the colorful plastic swords, rescued from sandwiches on a fencing trip to Chicago. My lifelong education of other languages and cultures is pictured in a few words and a postcard from Japan. Since, as in life, no one aspect stands completely alone, I have chosen to have no one compartment of the box be without some part of the others. Thus the music tumbles down past the seasons, dances by the cross, and lands at a snowman's feet while Japanese women from long ago stand on a bridge in two different seasons and take it all in.
