ARTIST'S STATEMENT Jenette Schanick As the sun casts its brilliant rays of orange, magenta, and turquoise the crewmembers of Jacques Cousteau¹s fleet gather the large sails as the 100-ft sea vessel plunges though the cobalt blue Ocean. The 25-day excursion has brought many exciting discoveries. From hidden treasures of a lost Greek civilization, to making its journey to Egypt and following a pod of great blue whales while recording their behavior, eating, along with their social developmental structures. What a great journey it had been. The backbone to their success has been their mighty ship; without her they could have never travelled as far as they had. Now pulling into port the ³genette² is unloaded of her riches and put to rest until Captain Cousteau and his sailors set forth on yet another adventure into the great seas of the world. I was January 25, 1977 in Flint, Michigan and my mother chose the name ³Jenette² as an inspiration for me to help me become and achieve whatever my adventure in life takes me. This Self- portrait portrays me in the thinking position. The first square on the far left is expressing the many doors of accomplishments and failures I have experienced. Following to the right, the next square is seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, which helps me recognize the positive in all situations. The third square represents the different sails and textures of life. It seems nothing looks or feels, as it seems. The forth and final square represents my garden of imagination. I have really enjoyed this assignment and I hope you have been interested enough to read this description of a girl named, Jenette Schanick.
